Al-Badi' comes from the root b-d-ʿ, meaning to bring something into being for the first time, with nothing like it before. Al-Badi' is both the One who creates without precedent and the One whose creations carry a matchless beauty.
Human creativity is really a rearranging of materials that already exist; Allah's creation needs no example, material, or model. The fact that every face, every fingerprint, and every leaf is different from every other can be seen as a visible trace of this name.
The name appears twice in the Qur'an as Badi' as-samawati wal-ard, "Originator of the heavens and the earth" (Al-Baqarah 2:117 and Al-An'am 6:101). The verse in Al-Baqarah adds that when He decrees a matter, He only says to it, "Be," and it is.
