About
Al-Jami' comes from the root j-m-ʿ, meaning to gather, to bring together, and to unite. Holding seemingly opposite things together in harmony also falls within the meaning of this root.
The name can be understood on several levels. Allah brings the diverse elements of the universe together in order, draws hearts toward one another, and gathers what has been scattered. In its clearest sense, He is the One who will gather all people on a Day about which there is no doubt.
The name appears in Surah Aal-Imran, verse 9, within a prayer, in the sense of "the One who will gather the people." The words that follow, "Allah does not fail in His promise," stress that this gathering is a certain promise.

Our Lord, surely You will gather the people for a Day about which there is no doubt. Indeed, Allah does not fail in His promise."
