About
At-Tawwab comes from the root t-w-b, "to return." Repentance is a servant's return to God after a mistake; God's "turning," in turn, is guiding the servant toward repentance and accepting that return. The intensive form At-Tawwab conveys that this acceptance happens again and again.
This Name reminds us that no mistake leaves a person at a point of no return. The door is always open; what matters is turning back with sincere regret and taking a step to make things right.
At-Tawwab appears in many verses of the Qur'an, most often paired with Ar-Rahim. The account of Adam, who received words from his Lord and whose repentance was accepted, is among the best-known illustrations of this Name.
From the Qur'an
Then Adam received from his Lord [some] words, and He accepted his repentance. Indeed, it is He who is the Accepting of Repentance, the Merciful.
Do they not know that it is Allah who accepts repentance from His servants and receives charities and that it is Allah who is the Accepting of Repentance, the Merciful?
Reflection
When you make a mistake, it is easy either to avoid thinking about it or to keep blaming yourself. At-Tawwab points to a third way: acknowledging the mistake, feeling genuine regret and beginning again. Knowing that the door of return is never closed to you gives you both courage and responsibility. Try to meet other people's mistakes with the same openness, giving them room to begin again.
