About
Al-Muta'ali comes from the root '-l-w, "to be high, to be exalted." Its verbal form expresses the utmost degree of exaltedness: God is far above every deficiency and limitation of created things and every comparison the human mind might construct.
Sharing its root with Al-Aliyy and Al-A'la, Al-Muta'ali conveys that this exaltedness is not a matter of physical place but of rank and perfection. His exaltedness is mentioned together with His knowledge of both the hidden and the seen.
The Name appears in the ninth verse of Surah Ar-Ra'd alongside Al-Kabir: He is the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, the Grand, the Exalted.
