About
Al-Batin comes from the root b-t-n, "to be hidden, to be within." The reality of God's essence cannot be grasped by the senses or the intellect, and at the same time He knows the inner side and the secret of everything.
This Name can be considered from two sides. On one hand, His reality lies beyond human comprehension; on the other, He is closer to a person than their jugular vein and knows what passes through them. Distance and nearness meet in this Name.
Al-Batin appears in the third verse of Surah Al-Hadid together with Az-Zahir. A verse in Surah Qaf expresses the nearness side of this Name in a striking way.
From the Qur'an
He is the First and the Last, the Ascendant and the Intimate, and He is, of all things, Knowing.
And We have already created man and know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than [his] jugular vein.
