Az-Zahir
The Manifest, whose existence is evident through His signs and who is above all things.
About
Az-Zahir comes from the root z-h-r, "to appear, to become visible; to prevail." Though God is not seen with the eyes, His existence is evident through His works and signs, and He holds supremacy over all things.
The order of the universe, the balance within living beings and the inner world of the human being are all seen as signs pointing to Him. Surah Fussilat says that God will show His signs both in the horizons and within people themselves.
Az-Zahir appears in the third verse of Surah Al-Hadid together with its counterpart, Al-Batin. The pairing conveys that He is both clearly evident in everything and beyond all comprehension.
From the Qur'an
He is the First and the Last, the Ascendant and the Intimate, and He is, of all things, Knowing.
We will show them Our signs in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear to them that it is the truth. But is it not sufficient concerning your Lord that He is, over all things, a Witness?
Reflection
Each day, many things pass before your eyes unnoticed out of habit: the sunrise, a child's laughter, the flawless workings of your own body. Az-Zahir reminds you of the difference between looking and seeing. When you look with attention, what seemed ordinary begins to carry meaning. Today, open your eyes to be amazed again by what you have grown used to.
