About
Al-Muqaddim comes from the root q-d-m, "to be in front, to go ahead," and means the One who brings forward and advances. He determines what comes first in time, rank or degree.
This Name is paired with Al-Mu'akhkhir. That some people stand out in certain ways while others advance in different areas is part of an order He has set with wisdom; these differences are both a test and a way for people to complete one another.
Al-Muqaddim does not appear as an attribute in the Qur'an; it is found in hadith and in the lists of Beautiful Names. Its meaning, however, is clear in verses stating that some people have been favored over others, and that both those who came before and those who come after are known to God.
From the Qur'an
Look how We have favored [in provision] some of them over others. But the Hereafter is greater in degrees [of difference] and greater in distinction.
And We have already known the preceding [generations] among you, and We have already known the later [ones to come].
