The Delayer, who holds back whatever He wills according to His wisdom.
About
Al-Mu'akhkhir comes from the root '-kh-r, "to be behind, to come later," and means the One who defers and holds back. He determines what is left for later and when the time for each thing arrives.
God's delay is often a mercy and an opportunity: people are given time to reflect, to turn back and to set right their mistakes. Yet once the appointed time comes, it is not postponed, which reminds us how valuable time is.
Al-Mu'akhkhir does not appear as an attribute in the Qur'an; it is mentioned in hadith together with Al-Muqaddim. In Surah Nuh, the Prophet Noah tells his people that God will delay them for a specified term, but that when His appointed time comes, it will not be delayed.
From the Qur'an
To worship Allah, fear Him and obey me. He [i.e., Allah] will forgive you of your sins and delay you for a specified term. Indeed, the time [set by] Allah, when it comes, will not be delayed, if you only knew."
Reflection
When something you long for is delayed, impatience can set in; a door or an opportunity may not arrive when you expected it. Al-Mu'akhkhir invites you to consider that what looks like a delay may hold wisdom. The waiting can be space given to you to prepare and to grow. At the same time, remember that the time you are given is not unlimited, and use it well.
