About
Al-Muqtadir shares the root q-d-r with Al-Qadir, but its verbal form intensifies the meaning. It expresses power that is uninterrupted, flawless and actively at work in every situation.
Al-Qadir emphasizes that the power exists; Al-Muqtadir emphasizes that it is carried out with complete command over all things. No task burdens Him, and nothing can hinder what He decrees.
In the Qur'an, this Name appears in a verse of Surah Al-Kahf describing how fleeting worldly life is, and in Surah Al-Qamar, which says the righteous will be seated "near a Sovereign, Perfect in Ability."
From the Qur'an
Indeed, the righteous will be among gardens and rivers, In a seat of honor near a Sovereign, Perfect in Ability.
And present to them the example of the life of this world, [its being] like rain which We send down from the sky, and the vegetation of the earth mingles with it and [then] it becomes dry remnants, scattered by the winds. And Allah is ever, over all things, Perfect in Ability.
Reflection
Worldly life flourishes and then withers, like the parable in Surah Al-Kahf; much of what you think of as power is just as temporary. Titles, resources and the feeling of control can all change. Al-Muqtadir reminds you where real and lasting power lies, guarding you from both arrogance and despair. Whatever power you hold, large or small, take care to use it with justice and mercy.
