About
Al-Qadir comes from the root q-d-r, "to be able, to measure and determine." Power, for God, means doing what He wills without any obstacle; His power has no limit and He is never unable.
The root's sense of "measure" adds depth to this Name: God's power is not random but measured and wise. Everything is created with a precise proportion and order.
The Qur'an frequently speaks of God's power with the phrase "He is over all things competent." Surah Ya-Sin reminds us that the One who created the heavens and the earth is surely able to create their like, inviting reflection on the resurrection.
From the Qur'an
Is not He who created the heavens and the earth Able to create the likes of them? Yes, [it is so]; and He is the Knowing Creator.
