As-Samad
The Eternal Refuge, who needs nothing while everything needs Him.
About
As-Samad comes from the root s-m-d. The word describes a master to whom people turn in times of need; it also carries the sense of something solid and complete, lacking nothing.
These two meanings complete each other: God needs nothing, and everything needs Him. Surah Fatir puts it plainly: people are in need of God, while He is free of all need.
As-Samad appears only once in the Qur'an, in the second verse of Surah Al-Ikhlas. Despite that single mention, it is regarded as one of the most comprehensive Names describing God.

Allah, the Eternal Refuge.
O mankind, you are those in need of Allah, while Allah is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy.
Reflection
For every need, you turn to some door: a person, an institution, a resource. These are means, but none of them is a true refuge; each depends on something else. As-Samad teaches you to free your heart from that long chain of dependence and anchor it in the One who needs nothing. That anchor brings balance to what you expect from others and leaves you freer.
