Al-Hayy
The Ever-Living, whose life has no beginning, no end, and no source outside Himself.
About
Al-Hayy comes from the root h-y-y, "to live, to be alive." God's life is not like created life, which begins, depends on causes, and eventually ends. His life is His own, without beginning or end.
All life in every living thing is a gift from Him. Knowledge, will and power all presuppose life, which is why Al-Hayy is often seen as the foundation of many other Names.
In the Qur'an, Al-Hayy appears alongside Al-Qayyum in the Verse of the Throne (Al-Baqarah 2:255), in Aal-Imran 3:2 and in Ta-Ha 20:111. Surah Al-Furqan calls believers to rely on "the Ever-Living who does not die," and Surah Ghafir declares, "He is the Ever-Living."
From the Qur'an
And rely upon the Ever-Living who does not die, and exalt [Allah] with His praise. And sufficient is He to be, with the sins of His servants, [fully] Aware - …
He is the Ever-Living; there is no deity except Him, so call upon Him, [being] sincere to Him in religion. [All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
Reflection
Everything around you changes, grows tired and eventually ends: people, plans, opportunities. When you place all your trust in what is passing, you are shaken whenever it is shaken. Al-Hayy reminds you that you can lean on a Life that never runs out. That support also awakens the life within you, calling you to live the days you are given with attention and care.
