About
Al-Hamid comes from the root h-m-d, meaning to praise someone and extol them for their fine qualities and good deeds. The word hamd includes both gratitude for a blessing and praise of what is beautiful for its own sake.
Al-Hamid is the One worthy of praise in His essence, His attributes and His actions. He deserves praise whether or not anyone offers it; He has no need of His servants' praise, and it is the one who praises who gains. The fact that the opening chapter of the Quran begins with praise shows how central this meaning is.
In the Quran the name is frequently paired with "Ghani" (the Free of need). Surah Fatir reminds humanity that they are the ones in need of Allah, while Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy. The same pairing appears in Surahs Luqman and Ibrahim.

Reflection
On most days, criticizing comes more easily than praising. Remembering Al-Hamid means learning to notice the good around you and to see where it truly comes from. Praising Him matters not because He needs it, but because it brings light to your own heart. Giving thanks for every good thing you notice changes the way you see.
