Al-Waliyy
The Protecting Friend; the Ally and Guardian of those who believe.
About
Al-Waliyy comes from the root w-l-y, meaning to be near, to follow closely with nothing in between, to befriend and to take charge of a matter. The words wilayah (guardianship) and tawalli (taking charge, turning toward) share this root.
Al-Waliyy is the Friend of those who believe, the One who helps them, takes charge of their affairs and protects them. This friendship is not a relationship between equals; it is the All-Powerful showing closeness and care to the servant who turns to Him.
The name appears in many verses. Surah Al-Baqarah tells us that Allah is the ally of those who believe and brings them out of darkness into light. In Surah Ash-Shura, He is described as the One who sends down rain after people had despaired and spreads His mercy, and is named together as "Waliyy" and "Hamid."

And it is He who sends down the rain after they had despaired and spreads His mercy. And He is the Protector, the Praiseworthy.
Reflection
Like rain falling just when you thought hope had run dry, help sometimes comes from where you least expect it. Remembering Al-Waliyy means knowing that you do not walk the road alone. Someone aware of that friendship learns how to be a friend to others as well. Today, you can be a quiet friend in someone's life who helps carry their load.
