About
As-Salam comes from the root s-l-m, meaning soundness, safety, wholeness, peace and surrender. The words Islam and Muslim share this root. As-Salam is both the One who is free of every flaw and the One from whom peace and well-being flow.
The name has two sides. First, there is no defect, harm or deficiency in His being or His actions. Second, He grants peace and tranquility to His servants. When Muslims greet one another with "as-salamu alaykum," they carry this name and its meaning into everyday life.
The name As-Salam appears in Al-Hashr 59:23. Paradise is called Dar as-Salam, the Home of Peace (Yunus 10:25, Al-An'am 6:127), and Surah Al-Qadr describes the Night of Decree as peace until the break of dawn.
From the Qur'an
He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Perfection, the Grantor of Security, the Overseer, the Exalted in Might, the Compeller, the Superior. Exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him.
And Allah invites to the Home of Peace [i.e., Paradise] and guides whom He wills to a straight path.
Reflection
To greet someone with peace is to tell them, "You have nothing to fear from me." As-Salam reminds you that peace can begin in your own words and manner. In a tense room today, be the first to speak gently. Sometimes one calm sentence is enough to change the air.
