About
Al-Quddus comes from the root q-d-s, which carries the meaning of purity, cleanness and holiness. Jerusalem's Arabic name, al-Quds, the Qur'anic phrase "the holy land" and the title Ruh al-Qudus given to Gabriel all come from this root.
Al-Quddus is the One beyond every deficiency, fault, error and limitation the human mind might imagine. To call on Allah by this name is to declare Him far above any likeness to creation and anything unworthy of Him. It is closely tied to the meaning of the phrase SubhanAllah.
The name appears twice in the Qur'an, in Al-Hashr 59:23 and Al-Jumu'ah 62:1. In both verses it comes directly after Al-Malik, showing that His sovereignty is pure: untouched by injustice, error or lack.

Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth is exalting Allah, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
