Al-Wadud comes from the root w-d-d, which carries the meanings of love, affection and wholehearted desire. The words wudd and mawaddah describe a love that does not stay hidden inside but shows itself in action.
Al-Wadud is the One who loves His servants, wishes good for them and welcomes with love those who turn to Him; the name also means the One most deserving of love. It shows that the relationship between the Creator and His servant is not only one of command and obedience, but also a bond of love.
The name appears twice in the Quran: in Surah Hud, in the words of the prophet Shu'ayb, alongside "Rahim" (the Merciful), and in Surah Al-Buruj alongside "Ghafur" (the Forgiving). Being paired with mercy and forgiveness suggests that this love embraces pardon and compassion. Surah Maryam also tells us that the Most Merciful will create affection for those who believe and do righteous deeds.
