About
Al-Karim comes from the root k-r-m, which gathers meanings of generosity, nobility, worth and being the finest of one's kind. In Arabic, a precious stone, fertile soil or a plant that yields abundantly can all be described as karim.
Al-Karim is the One who gives before being asked, never reminds you of His gifts, grants more than is deserved and forgives without humiliating. His generosity is not limited to material blessings; His pardon, His covering of faults and His giving of chance after chance are all part of this name.
In the Quran the name appears in a striking question in Surah Al-Infitar: what has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Generous, who created and shaped you? Surah An-Naml describes Him as "ghaniyyun karim" (Free of need and Generous), and Surah Al-Alaq calls Him "al-akram" (the Most Generous). The Quran also describes itself as "Quran karim," a noble Quran, in Surah Al-Waqi'ah.

O mankind, what has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Generous, Who created you, proportioned you, and balanced you? In whatever form He willed has He assembled you.
Reflection
Most of what you have, you received without ever asking: your breath, your sight, the people who love you. The Generous gave without keeping a ledger. You can show generosity too, not only with money but with your time, your attention and a kind word. When you give without expecting anything back, you will notice how much room it opens up in your own heart.
