Al-Jalil
The Majestic; the One whose greatness surpasses everything.
About
Al-Jalil comes from the root j-l-l, which carries the ideas of greatness, loftiness and immense worth. The related word jalal describes majesty itself, and the deep reverence, mixed with awe and wonder, that such majesty stirs in the heart.
Al-Jalil is the One who is exalted in His attributes and His actions, untouched by any deficiency, and whose greatness the mind cannot fully grasp. His majesty is not meant to push people away in fear; it invites them to see everything else in its true proportion.
The name does not appear in this exact form in the Quran, but the phrase "dhul-jalali wal-ikram" (Owner of Majesty and Honor) is used twice in Surah Ar-Rahman. After reminding us that everything on earth will perish, the surah declares that only the Lord of majesty and honor remains, joining greatness and generosity in a single description.
From the Qur'an
Everyone upon it [i.e., the earth] will perish, And there will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor.
Blessed is the name of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honor.
Reflection
Every day, things come your way that seem to make you bigger or smaller: praise, criticism, a title, a loss. All of them pass, and only His majesty remains. When you keep that in mind, you lean less on other people's approval and more on what is right. Knowing that true greatness belongs to Him protects you from arrogance and from feeling worthless alike.
