About
Al-Hasib comes from the root h-s-b, which means both to count or calculate and to suffice. The word hisab, account or reckoning, comes from it. The phrase "hasbunallah" (Allah is sufficient for us) reflects the name's second meaning (Aal-Imran 3:173).
Al-Hasib appears a few times in the Qur'an. In Surah An-Nisa, believers are told to return a greeting with a better one or at least an equal one, and the verse ends: "Indeed Allah is ever, over all things, an Accountant." Even the smallest courtesy is part of the account. In Surah Al-Ahzab we read: "And sufficient is Allah as Accountant."
This name brings both responsibility and reassurance: no effort is forgotten, and He is enough for His servant.
From the Qur'an
And when you are greeted with a greeting, greet [in return] with one better than it or [at least] return it [in a like manner]. Indeed Allah is ever, over all things, an Accountant.
[Allah praises] those who convey the messages of Allah and fear Him and do not fear anyone but Allah. And sufficient is Allah as Accountant.
Reflection
