Al-Kabir comes from the root k-b-r, meaning to be great. The phrase "Allahu akbar" (Allah is the Greatest) and the word takbir share this root. The name expresses that true greatness belongs to Him alone.
In the Qur'an, Al-Kabir usually appears with Al-Aliyy or Al-Muta'al. Surah Ar-Ra'd describes Him as the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, the Grand, the Exalted. From the same root comes kibr, arrogance, which the Qur'an treats as a flaw in people, because it means claiming a greatness that isn't one's own.
This name reminds a person both of His greatness and of their own measure. If greatness is His, humility is ours.
