About
Al-Ghafur comes from the root gh-f-r, meaning to cover, conceal and protect. The Arabic word for a helmet, mighfar, comes from the same root. Maghfirah, forgiveness, means both that a fault is covered and that a person is protected from its harmful consequences. The form ghafur conveys forgiveness that is abundant and deep.
Al-Ghafur is among the names mentioned most often in the Qur'an, usually alongside Ar-Rahim. The verse in Surah Az-Zumar calls out even to those who have transgressed against themselves: "Do not despair of the mercy of Allah." It is known as one of the most hope-giving calls in the Qur'an.
This name reminds us that no mistake condemns a person to hopelessness. It also encourages us to cover the faults of others and to forgive.

Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."
Reflection
You may still be carrying a mistake from your past. Regret has value, but when it turns into despair, it keeps you stuck. Just as you can hope to be forgiven, you can cover someone else's fault and avoid embarrassing them in front of others. Today, give both yourself and someone else the chance to turn a new page.
