Al-Latif comes from the root l-t-f, meaning to be fine, gentle, hidden and graceful. The name holds two layers of meaning: knowing the most hidden and delicate of things, and doing good to His servants in ways so subtle they often go unnoticed.
Al-Latif usually appears in the Qur'an alongside Al-Khabir. Surah Al-An'am says that vision cannot perceive Him, while He perceives all vision. Surah Ash-Shura highlights that Allah is subtle and kind with His servants. When Joseph, after years of separation and hardship, says "Indeed, my Lord is Subtle in what He wills" (Yusuf 12:100), we see the trace of this name within a human life.
This name reminds us that behind the visible surface of events, a quiet kindness may be at work.

Allah is Subtle with His servants; He gives provision to whom He wills. And He is the Powerful, the Exalted in Might.
Vision perceives Him not, but He perceives [all] vision; and He is the Subtle, the Aware.
