About
Al-Adl comes from the root '-d-l, meaning to be equal, to balance, to be upright and fair. It describes the two pans of a scale sitting level. The name takes the form of a verbal noun, which emphasizes that Allah's justice is not merely an attribute He has, but that He is justice itself.
Al-Adl does not appear in the Qur'an as a title, yet justice is among the Qur'an's most central themes. Surah An-Nahl declares that Allah commands justice and good conduct. Surah Al-An'am states that the word of your Lord has been fulfilled in truth and in justice.
This name reminds us that every balance and every right in the world rests on His justice. To the extent that a person keeps the measure and gives each their due, they carry a reflection of this justice into their life.
From the Qur'an
Indeed, Allah orders justice and good conduct and giving [help] to relatives and forbids immorality and bad conduct and oppression. He admonishes you that perhaps you will be reminded.
And the word of your Lord has been fulfilled in truth and in justice. None can alter His words, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
Reflection
Justice doesn't live only in courtrooms; it lives in the small moments of daily life: dividing up a task, handling a disagreement, treating children or colleagues. It is easy to favor someone you love or to be unfair to someone you don't. Today, try to keep an eye on both sides of the scale. Giving someone their due, even when it costs you, is the hardest and most valuable form of justice.
