About
Al-Hakam comes from the root h-k-m, meaning to judge, to distinguish, and to restrain. At its core, the root means preventing corruption and injustice. The words hukm (ruling), hikmah (wisdom) and hakim (judge) all share it. Al-Hakam is the One who separates right from wrong and restores what is due.
The name appears clearly in Surah Al-An'am: "Is it other than Allah I should seek as judge?" The Qur'an also advises appointing arbitrators in disputes (An-Nisa 4:35), showing that fair arbitration between people is itself a valued task.
Al-Hakam reminds us not to rush our own judgments. The final and certain judgment belongs to Him; our part is to strive to be fair and balanced.
From the Qur'an
[Say], "Then is it other than Allah I should seek as judge while it is He who has revealed to you the Book [i.e., the Qur'an] explained in detail?" And those to whom We [previously] gave the Scripture know that it is sent down from your Lord in truth, so never be among the doubters.
Reflection
You make countless judgments every day, often without noticing: about people, about events, even about yourself. How many of them are hasty, or built on incomplete information? Knowing that the final judgment belongs to Him frees you from the burden of judging everyone and helps you become more understanding. Hearing both sides before taking one in a disagreement is a small reflection of this name in your life.
