The One who fully hears every sound, every word and every prayer.
About
As-Sami' comes from the root s-m-', meaning to hear, and its intensive form conveys "the One who hears completely and perfectly." His hearing depends on no organ and no distance; what is spoken aloud and what is only whispered in the heart are equally known to Him.
The name appears more than forty times in the Qur'an, usually paired with Al-Alim or Al-Basir. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Abraham and Ishmael pray as they raise the foundations of the Ka'bah: "Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing." Surah Al-Mujadilah opens by telling us that Allah heard the words of a woman who brought her complaint to Him.
This name is both a comfort and a responsibility: no prayer goes unheard, and no word is spoken in vain.
From the Qur'an
And [mention] when Abraham was raising the foundations of the House and [with him] Ishmael, [saying], "Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing. …
And when My servants ask you, [O Muhammad], concerning Me - indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided.
Reflection
Even when it feels like no one understands you, knowing that you are heard can make the loneliness lighter. A wish you only thought, a worry you never told anyone, is heard as well. In the same way, remembering that every word you say is heard can help you choose your words with care. Today, try truly listening to someone; they may need to be heard too.
