Ar-Rafi'
The One who raises whom He wills, degree by degree.
About
Ar-Rafi' comes from the root r-f-', meaning to lift, raise or elevate. It is used for lifting something off the ground, raising the foundations of a building, or elevating someone's standing.
The Qur'an speaks often of Allah raising people up. Surah Al-Mujadilah promises that Allah will raise, by degrees, those who believe and those who have been given knowledge, and it's striking that this promise comes alongside something as ordinary as making room for others in a gathering. Surah Ghafir describes Allah as the One "exalted above all degrees" (Ghafir 40:15).
Ar-Rafi' is understood together with Al-Khafid. True elevation does not come from status or fame, but from faith, knowledge, character and the kindness we show others.
From the Qur'an
O you who have believed, when you are told, "Space yourselves" in assemblies, then make space; Allah will make space for you. And when you are told, "Arise," then arise; Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. And Allah is Aware of what you do.
Reflection
When you think of rising, you might picture titles, achievements or visibility. Yet the Qur'an ties rising in rank to knowledge and to a small courtesy like making room for someone else. The time you spend learning today, and the space you open for another person, lift you in the truest sense. You never need to lower anyone in order to rise.
