Al-Khafid
The One who, in His wisdom, lowers whom He wills and brings down arrogance.
About
Al-Khafid comes from the root kh-f-d, meaning to lower, bring down or soften. The same root appears in the Qur'an in the command to "lower the wing of humility" toward one's parents out of mercy (Al-Isra 17:24). So the root carries not only the idea of descent, but also gentleness and humility.
In the traditional lists of the Beautiful Names, Al-Khafid is paired with Ar-Rafi'. It does not appear in the Qur'an as a title, but Surah Al-Waqi'ah describes the Day of Judgment as one that will bring some down and raise others up. People will find their place not by their worldly rank, but by their true worth. In the verse, it is the Event itself that brings down and raises up; its link to the name Al-Khafid lies in this overwhelming event coming about by Allah's decree.
This name is not meant to frighten, but to restore a sense of balance: no position lasts forever, and no arrogance brings real height. Allah's lowering is always just and wise; no one is wronged.
