Al-Basit
The One who expands and extends provision, mercy and relief as He wills.
About
Al-Basit comes from the Arabic root b-s-t, meaning to open, spread out or extend. The same root describes opening one's hand, unrolling a carpet, or a heart that feels at ease. The name speaks of Allah widening provision, mercy, opportunity and inner peace for whomever He wills, in the measure He wills.
It is traditionally paired with Al-Qabid, the One who withholds. The Qur'an does not use Al-Basit as a noun title, but the verb appears often: "It is Allah who withholds and grants abundance." Expansion and constriction may look like opposites, yet both flow from the same wisdom. Surah Ash-Shura reminds us that provision is sent down in measure, and that unlimited abundance does not always lead to good.
This name points to where every blessing comes from, and to the meaning of passing it on. Whoever opens to others what has been opened to them lives out something of this name.
From the Qur'an
Who is it that would loan Allah a goodly loan so He may multiply it for him many times over? And it is Allah who withholds and grants abundance, and to Him you will be returned.
And if Allah had extended [excessively] provision for His servants, they would have committed tyranny throughout the earth. But He sends [it] down in an amount which He wills. Indeed He is, of His servants, Aware and Seeing.
Reflection
Look at the areas of your life where you feel room to breathe: your time, your health, a friendship, an opportunity. None of these are purely your own doing; they are doors that were opened for you. In a season of tightness, you can remember that a closed door may simply be one whose time has not yet come. And when openness is a trust, opening it to others becomes part of your share.
