Al-Alim

About
Al-Alim comes from the root a-l-m, meaning to know and to grasp the reality of something. The words ilm (knowledge), alim (scholar) and alam (sign, marker) share this root. The fa'il pattern stresses that this knowledge is comprehensive, deep and permanent.
Al-Alim is the One who knows past, present and future, the seen and the unseen, what is spoken aloud and what is hidden in hearts, completely and without gaps. Human knowledge is acquired, limited and open to error; Allah's knowledge has no limits. The name brings both humility and reassurance: there are things you do not know, but nothing lies outside His knowledge.
Al-Alim is among the most frequently occurring names in the Qur'an and is usually paired with Al-Hakim (the Wise), As-Sami' (the All-Hearing) or Al-Khabir (the All-Aware). In Al-Baqarah 2:32, the angels confess, "we have no knowledge except what You have taught us," a beautiful reminder of where knowledge truly comes from.

They said, "Exalted are You; we have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed, it is You who is the Knowing, the Wise."
Reflection
You do not have to know everything; saying "I don't know" is a virtue too. Al-Alim reminds you that knowledge is a trust and that everything you learn opens a new door. Your inner world, which you may feel no one understands, is fully known to Him, so you need not feel alone in it. Today, set aside a little time to learn something you are curious about.
