Al-Fattah comes from the root f-t-h, meaning to open: to open a door, to open a city, to resolve a problem, and to settle a matter between two parties by judging between them. The words fath (opening, victory), miftah (key) and Fatiha (the Opening) all share this root.
Al-Fattah is the One who opens the doors of mercy and provision, untangles difficulties, clears paths that seemed closed and judges between people with truth. The intensive fa''al pattern stresses that these openings are many and ongoing. The name reminds us that a way out can be found from both material and inner hardship.
Al-Fattah appears in Saba 34:26 together with Al-Alim. In Al-A'raf 7:89 He is addressed as "the best of those who give decision." Fatir 35:2 declares that no one can hold back the mercy He opens, and Al-An'am 6:59 states that the keys of the unseen are with Him alone.
From the Qur'an
Say, "Our Lord will bring us together; then He will judge between us in truth. And He is the Knowing Judge."
Whatever Allah grants to people of mercy - none can withhold it; and whatever He withholds - none can release it thereafter. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
