The Light of the heavens and the earth, who illuminates and makes all things visible.
About
An-Nur comes from the root n-w-r, meaning light, brightness, and radiance. Light is that which is visible in itself and makes other things visible. Allah being An-Nur is understood as His bringing beings out of the darkness of nonexistence into being, and giving people a light by which they can see the truth.
Scholars have explained this name without limiting it to physical light: Allah is the illuminator of the heavens and the earth, the One who gives knowledge to minds and guidance to hearts. The Qur'an often speaks of revelation, faith, and guidance as "light," and the phrase "bringing out of darkness into light" recurs in many verses.
The name appears directly in verse 35 of the surah that bears it, Surah An-Nur: "Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth." The verse describes this light through the parable of a lamp, a glass, and a clear olive oil, and deepens it with the words "light upon light."

Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The example of His light is like a niche within which is a lamp; the lamp is within glass, the glass as if it were a pearly [white] star lit from [the oil of] a blessed olive tree, neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would almost glow even if untouched by fire. Light upon light. Allah guides to His light whom He wills. And Allah presents examples for the people, and Allah is Knowing of all things.
Reflection
In a dark room, even one small candle changes everything. An-Nur reminds you that light is possible even in the corners of your life that feel darkest. If something has you confused, slowing down to think, learning more, and seeking advice are the doors that open onto that light. You can be a lamp for the people around you, too: through a good word, honest advice, or a hopeful attitude.
