Ad-Darr comes from the root d-r-r, meaning harm, hardship, and constraint. In the lists of the Beautiful Names it always appears side by side with An-Nafi', the Benefactor, and it is understood not on its own but together with it: harm and benefit alike are created by Allah alone.
This paired name teaches that nothing in existence happens outside His will. The hardships people face are not random or meaningless; they unfold within a measure and a wisdom. Scholars have pointed out that difficulty may be a test, a wake-up call, a path to maturity, or the means to a greater good.
Ad-Darr does not appear in this exact form in the Qur'an, but its meaning is expressed in Surah Yunus, verse 107: if Allah touches you with adversity, none can remove it but Him, and if He intends good for you, none can repel His bounty. That the verse closes with "He is the Forgiving, the Merciful" shows that this name must be understood alongside mercy and forgiveness.

And if Allah should touch you with adversity, there is no remover of it except Him; and if He intends for you good, then there is no repeller of His bounty. He causes it to reach whom He wills of His servants. And He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.
Reflection
When you're going through a hard season, the question "Why me?" can take over your thoughts. Ad-Darr reminds you that even this difficulty falls within a measure and a wisdom, and that He is also the One who can lift it. This doesn't mean minimizing the pain; it means carrying it with trust rather than a sense of meaninglessness. Sharing your burden, asking for help, and doing what you reasonably can are all part of that trust. Knowing that harm and benefit come from the same Hand keeps hope alive even when every door seems shut.
