About
Malik al-Mulk joins two words from the root m-l-k: malik, the one who owns, and mulk, everything that can be owned, along with dominion and rule. Together they mean "Owner of Sovereignty" - the One who owns ownership itself.
The name reaches a step beyond al-Malik, the King. People own things and exercise authority for a while, but all of it is on loan, and its real owner is Allah. Every position, fortune, and opportunity in human hands looks, next to this true ownership, like a temporary trust.
The name appears in the Qur'an in Surah Aal-Imran, verse 26, within a prayer. The verse declares that He gives sovereignty and takes it away, that honor and humiliation are in His hands, and that all good lies in His hand.

Say, "O Allah, Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will. You honor whom You will and You humble whom You will. In Your hand is [all] good. Indeed, You are over all things competent. …
Reflection
Think of everything you have as something you'll one day hand on: your home, your work, your time, even your talents. Malik al-Mulk puts both the fear of losing and the hunger for more into perspective. When you treat what you've been given as a trust to use well rather than something you're owed, you tend to become both more generous and more at peace. And when something slips out of your hands, knowing who its real Owner is makes the loss lighter.
