Ar-Rahim shares the root r-h-m with Ar-Rahman and likewise speaks of mercy and compassion. Its fa'il pattern, however, highlights continuity and depth. If Ar-Rahman describes how wide mercy reaches, Ar-Rahim describes how it keeps coming, steady and close.
Scholars often explain the two names side by side: Ar-Rahman is the mercy that embraces all creation in this world, while Ar-Rahim is the special, lasting mercy shown to those who believe, turn to Him and ask for help. The Qur'an also uses the word rahim for the Prophet (At-Tawbah 9:128), a reminder that mercy is a quality human beings can reflect as well.
In the Qur'an, Ar-Rahim appears alongside Ar-Rahman in the basmala and is frequently paired with Al-Ghafur (the Forgiving) and Ar-Ra'uf (the Kind). These pairings point to forgiveness and gentleness as expressions of His mercy.

And your god is one God. There is no deity [worthy of worship] except Him, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
Reflection
Mercy is not a single act that runs out; it is a posture you return to again and again. Ar-Rahim reminds you that the mercy shown to you has never worn thin. Today you can be gentle one more time, with someone who got it wrong or with yourself. Sometimes mercy is not a grand sacrifice, just a softer tone of voice.
