Al-Qahhar comes from the root q-h-r, meaning to prevail, to overcome and to bring into submission. Its intensive fa''al pattern stresses that this supremacy is complete and unbroken.
Al-Qahhar is the One whom no power can withstand and to whose will everything yields. The name reminds us that the fears, tyrannies and self-important powers that press down on people are, in truth, limited. It also suggests that a person can ask Him for strength against their own harmful impulses.
Wherever Al-Qahhar appears in the Qur'an, it is paired with Al-Wahid, the One: Yusuf 12:39, Ar-Ra'd 13:16, Ibrahim 14:48, Sad 38:65, Az-Zumar 39:4 and Ghafir 40:16. The pairing teaches that true and absolute supremacy can belong only to the One who has no partner.

O [my] two companions of prison, are separate lords better or Allah, the One, the Prevailing?
The Day they come forth nothing concerning them will be concealed from Allah. To whom belongs [all] sovereignty this Day? To Allah, the One, the Prevailing.
