About
Al-Musawwir comes from the root s-w-r, meaning form, shape and appearance. The words sura (form, image) and tasawwur (picturing something in the mind) share this root. Al-Musawwir is the One who shapes and fashions.
Al-Khaliq, Al-Bari' and Al-Musawwir are often explained together as stages of creation: determining, bringing into being and giving form. Al-Musawwir describes the final step, granting each being the particular appearance and structure that sets it apart. That no two faces, fingerprints or leaves are exactly alike opens a door to reflecting on this name.
The name appears in Al-Hashr 59:24. Verbs from the same root appear in many verses about human creation: Aal-Imran 3:6 speaks of being shaped in the womb, while At-Taghabun 64:3 and Ghafir 40:64 remind us of the beautiful form given to human beings.

He is Allah, the Creator, the Producer, the Fashioner; to Him belong the best names. Whatever is in the heavens and earth is exalting Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
It is He who forms you in the wombs however He wills. There is no deity except Him, the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
Reflection
The face you see in the mirror is a form given with care. Al-Musawwir invites you to look at your body and appearance with gratitude rather than criticism. When you get stuck on something you dislike about yourself, remember that it too is part of that care. Today, try looking at yourself and others with a gentler eye.
