About
Al-Mutakabbir comes from the root k-b-r, meaning to be great and exalted. The word akbar in "Allahu akbar" and kibriya (majesty) come from the same root. Al-Mutakabbir is the One to whom greatness and grandeur truly belong.
The name teaches that greatness befits Allah alone. When the same root describes human beings, as kibr (arrogance), it is a blameworthy trait, because a person who acts grand is claiming a quality that is not theirs. Allah's greatness, by contrast, is real: everything is His creation, and nothing is equal to Him.
Al-Mutakabbir appears as a divine name in Al-Hashr 59:23. Al-Jathiyah 45:37 declares that all grandeur in the heavens and the earth belongs to Him, while many other verses criticize those who think themselves great and turn away from the truth.
From the Qur'an
He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Perfection, the Grantor of Security, the Overseer, the Exalted in Might, the Compeller, the Superior. Exalted is Allah above whatever they associate with Him.
And to Him belongs [all] grandeur within the heavens and the earth, and He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
Reflection
Knowing that true greatness belongs only to Him is both freeing and simplifying. You do not have to know everything, win every argument or always be right. Al-Mutakabbir releases you from the exhausting work of seeming bigger than you are. Today, try the lightness that comes with saying, "I was wrong."
